Mangalore, November 6, 2007: Of the total 3,985 acres of land to be used for the proposed Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ), 17.20 per cent (about 685 acres) area will be reserved for maintaining greenery, said MSEZ Chief Operating Officer (COO) A G Pai.
Addressing the officials of various government departments regarding the SEZ project at a special meeting convened at Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Tuesday, he said 1,244 acres (31.22 per cent) have been classified as non-processing area, which comprises green belt, corridor, water storage, amenities and utilities.
The processing area will be 2,740 acres, which constitutes 68.78 per cent of the total acquired area. Ten units of MRPL (under its III phase), 7 units of aromatic complex and 9 units of Olefin complex will come up in the proposed area, he explained.
Phase I of the MSEZ project will include refinery expansion (from 12 MMTPA to 15 MMTPA), aromatic complex, Olefin complex, which require infrastructure like pipeline, transport corridor and utilities. The Phase II will include the establishment of LNG terminal, LNG regasification and C2, C3 recovery plant, he added.
According to Mr Pai, the special economic zone will require a total of 512 MW electricity and 45 gallons (2,04,504 lts) of water every day. He also delineated on the establishment of air quality monitoring stations and various other methods to control various kinds of pollution in the region.
Replying a query from Mr M R Vasudeva, the Director of Mangalore Airport, Mr Pai said they would soon consult the Airport Authority of India to specify the actual distance to be maintained between the airport and the SEZ. Mr Vasudeva said the distance between the two would play a crucial role in air traffic.
Answering another question, the COO said the MSEZ as a whole would provide about 40,000 direct and 2 lakh indirect job opportunities. Preference will be given to the displaced people, while the priority will continue towards those within the district and state respectively, he noted.
