Left cornered as Guv calls Nandigram war zone

Nandigram, November 10, 2007: The Left Front government is under immense pressure to bring peace in Nandigram after Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi said the place had become a “war zone”. Gandhi, in a press statement on Friday, said attacks on social activist Medha Patkar and other human rights activists in Nandigram “were against all norms of civilised political behaviour”.

”The manner in which the recapture of Nandigram villages is being attempted is totally unlawful and unacceptable,” Gandhi said. He was commenting on reports that CPI-M workers had forcibly recaptured villages in Nandigram where the party is fighting the Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee (BUMC), which is resisting land acquisition for industries.

“…the most accurate description for Nandigram is the one used by state Home Secretary that it has become a war zone. No government or society can allow a war zone to exist without immediate and effective action,” Gandhi said.

The Governor’s remarks come within 48 hours of his meeting with Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, who demanded that he declare Nandigram and Khejuri (a village) as “distrubed areas”.
