Dharwad, November 11, 2007: Opposing the acquisition of farmland for setting up of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in the State, Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) has launched an anti-SEZ campaign in the villages of Dharwad district. The SUCI has announced that it will organise a State-level rally against special economic zones in Bangalore on November 15.
As part of the proposed rally, the SUCI activists and leaders visited several villages in the district on Friday and Saturday to create awareness among the people on the issue.
The activists visited 40 villages in Kalghatgi and Dharwad taluks, including Dummawada, Hirehonnihalli, Bisaralli, Dastikoppa, Begur, Gambyapura, Gudihal, Hullambi Muttagi, Lakmapur, Yadavada, Neerlakatti, Garag and Tadakod, and interacted with the people. Public meetings were held at Lakmapur, Dastikoppa, Begur and Hirehonnihalli.
Addressing the people, the SUCI State committee member and president of Raitha Krishi Karmika Sanghatane (RKS), T.S. Sunitkumar, alleged that on the pretext of creating jobs, fertile farmland was being acquired and handed over to real estate bigwigs for developing townships, shopping malls and clubs.
Stating that no labour law applied to SEZs, he said exploitation of workers would increase further.
SUCI district unit secretary Ramanjanappa urged farmers and workers to fight against their exploitation. SUCI office-bearers H.G. Desai and Laxman Jadagannavar spoke.
