12 SEZs cleared for Vidarbha region: Deshmukh

Mumbai, November 12, 2007 (PTI): Twelve Special Economic Zones have been cleared for Vidarbha to ensure greater development in the region, which has witnessed several farmer suicides in recent times, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshukh today said. “For the overall development of Vidarbha, 12 SEZs will be set up in the land owned by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) in various parts of the region,” Deshmukh told reporters here.

One of the SEZs would be a textile hub spread over 1,000 hectares of land in Amravati. On similar lines, 11 more zones will be set up for different commodities, including one for food processing for which land had already been selected. “The land chosen for setting up of SEZs are barren and owned by the government. Not a single hectare has been taken from the farmers,” Deshmukh assured.
