New Delhi, November 19, 2007 (PTI): The CPI(M) today opposed BJP’s demand for a debate in Parliament on Nandigram but expressed readiness to discuss matters related to Maoism and terrorism besides SEZ.
Party Politburo member Sitaram Yechury said Nandigram issue cannot be discussed in Parliament as it was related to law and order which is a state subject.
“As law and order is in the state-list, Nandigram issue cannot be discussed in Parliament. It will set a wrong precedent. But we are ready for a discussion in the context of Maoism, terrorism and SEZ,” Yechury told reporters.
He said “nobody cared” about those people who were disallowed to comeback to Nandigram.
“For 11 months, people were not allowed to go to their homes in Nandigram. If they want to go home, is it a crime,” he added.
About reported human rights violation in Nandigram, Yechury shot back saying it was the job of the human rights commission and “let it work”.
Asked about West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya justifying the violence in Nandigram, Yechury refused to comment saying, “ask him”.
