Genpact’s IT SEZ in Orissa in three phases

Bhubaneswar, November 21, 2007: Orissa chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for an IT special economic zone (SEZ) promoted by BPO giant Genpact in Bhubaneswar.

Spread over 12.145 acres, the commissioning of this IT SEZ, the first one in Orissa, will take place in three phases between 2009 and 2011. On completion, around 500,000 sqft of office space will be available, and Genpact will recruit over 4,000 employees.

State IT minister SN Patro, industries minister BB Harichandan, chief secretary Ajit Kumar Tripathy and Genpact president and CEO Pramod Bhasin were present during the ground breaking ceremony.

“We will like to express our gratitude to the Orissa government for the support extended to us. It also marks a critical milestone in our expansion plans in India,” said Bhasin. “With strong infrastructure, good talent and tremendous government backing, we see Bhubaneswar emerging as an important location for the outsourcing industry.”

Bhasin said Bhubaneswar was going to be the 7th city of operation for Genpact in India after New Delhi, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Jaipur and Kolkata. The company has been allotted a 50-acre plot by the Andhra Pradesh government and a 25-acre plot by the Rajasthan government for development of IT SEZs.

State IT minister SN Patro said Orissa was targeting IT exports worth Rs 5000 crore by 2010. With IteS-BPO giant like Genpact coming here, it would not be difficult to achieve the target, he added.

Genpact, with over 24,000 employees in India, has topped the 2007 list of the 15 major IteS-BPO Companies in India by NASSCOM.
