Mangalore, December 7, 2007: Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) would move a proposal to include Bajpe International Airport in ‘SEZ corridor’ in the next SEZ board meeting planned in New Delhi. MSEZ Managing Director Prasad, Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KCCI) president Kumble Narasimha Prabhu when apprised about the direct and indirect benefits of having duty-free shops at Bajpe Airport had been impressed, sources told this website’s newspaper.
Duty-free stores in airport exempted from local or national taxes and duties, offered value-added services to passengers. Such stores availing indirect subsidy were also a source of profit for the airport, airlines and ferry companies, sources explained.
Bajpe Airport, the only international airport being run by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) in the state, should be developed as an alternative airport to Bangalore airport, they said adding; “the government must provide more facilities to help Bajpe Airport attract more passengers and airlines.”
Meanwhile, Bajpe Airport officials have written to the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) and the district administration on the need of different entry and exit points to the integrated terminal building coming up at Kenjar near Deccan Park.
KUIDFC is proposing to build a double-lane through Shree Devi College premises to the new terminal building planned at Kenjar. The double-lane would choke movement of traffic entering and exiting from the same point resulting in traffic snarls and accidents. A multiple-lane was the best option.
A multiple-lane is an ideal option but not economical. “Bajpe Airport has suggested the district administration and KUIDFC to utilise the proposed double-lane as gateway to the new terminal building and the existing road from Deccan Park as an exit passage,” sources informed.
The new integrated terminal building is expected to be completed by September 2008. But the terminal building will become operational in January 2009.
The construction of ‘new apron’ (parking area for aircraft) was expected to be completed by January 2008, sources said.
