Hyderabad, January 20, 2008: The Bharatiya Janata Party has expressed concern over farmers losing their lands with Government literally ‘grabbing’ them in the name of special economic zones (SEZs). It has accused the Government of ‘robbing’ ryots of their livelihood.
In a letter to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, BJP State president Bandaru Dattatreya made a specific mention of the Kakinada SEZ and said at least 16 villages would be worst-affected. He said the Government’s promise of generating employment was not a solace. Mr. Dattatreya regretted that farmers were being arrested for preventing officials from taking over what was basically theirs.
