Exporters see SEZ revenues surging

Kolkata, February 11, 2008: The exports from the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in the country is set to go upto Rs 1,00,000 crore by 2010 as 165 notified SEZs in the country are expected to be operational by that period.

This was announced by T Vasu, the chairman of the Export Promotion Council for EOUs (export oriented units) and SEZs under the Union ministry of commerce and industry.

Vasu pointed out that around 40 lakh people will be employed in SEZs by 2010. At present, India has over 40 SEZs which employ 2,66,167 people. The exports from SEZs in India in 2006-07 was Rs 34,787 crore, a 52 per cent growth over the previous year.
