Nagpur, March 15, 2008: The city is fast emerging as an international aircraft maintenance hub. Yet another aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility is set to come up at the special economic zone (SEZ) here.
US-based Duke Aviation has agreed to set up an MRO facility for aircrafts here. This will be the fourth MRO to come up in the SEZ.
Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) vice-chairman-cum-managing director R C Sinha said Duke Aviation will be allotted around 30 acres of land. This allotment will be endorsed by MADC’s board of directors in a meeting to be held today. The initial money for the project will follow shortly.
Though Sinha refused to divulge the rate at which the land was being allotted, he added that Duke will be investing around Rs 150 crore in the project. It is expected that the set up would create around 500 jobs.
Duke would initially begin with non-engine work, which mainly includes works such as that on curtains, floorings, painting of an aircraft or so.
Subsequently, the project would also undertake engine maintenance work, he said.
Boeing was the first to propose such a set up in Nagpur, and MADC has earmarked 75 acres of land for it. The company will be pumping in around Rs 400 crore for the project, though finer modalities of the agreement have to be worked out yet.
Other companies that have proposed MROs are Mumbai-based Max Aerospace, which would have its set up in 15 acres of area, and US-based Bravia, which has been allotted 35 acres for its MRO. Jet Airways is also planning an MRO in Nagpur.
