Surathkal, March 17, 2008: On the one hand farmers under the auspices of Krishi Bhoomi Samrakshana Samithi have decided not to give an inch of land for the MSEZ, on the other, Pragathipara Krishikara Hitharakshana Vedike has come into existence in support to the MSEZ, in a meeting held on Sunday.
In a close door meeting, former MLA Vijay Kumar Shetty said “SEZ will help in improving the economic condition of the country. We will urge all the companies under SEZ to provide employment to the Kannadigas. We will also seek compensation of Rs 3.5 lakh per acre from MSEZ.”
Office-bearers
Pragathipara Krishikara Vedike office-bearers were elected on the occasion.
They are Vijaykumar Shetty (honorary president), Yashodhar Shetty Ekkar (President), Pradyumna Rao (General Secretary) and Ibrahim (Treasurer).
Later speaking at a press meet, Mr Shetty said under MSEZ, textiles, watch and boat manufacturing units must be allowed. This will generate employment. We will urge two educated member from every displaced family to be given employment.
He opined that there is no profit from agriculture. There is sacrcity of agricultural labourers.
As a result, most of farmers have come forward to hand over the land.
Mr Shetty said 80 per cent of the people have agreed to hand over the land. As many as 67 persons had attended the meeting.
