Mumbai, March 18, 2008: The Konkan region of Maharashtra accounts for the largest number of SEZs (58) in the state, where 122 tax-free zones were approved till October 30, 2007.
This has been stated in the Economic Survey tabled in the Maharashtra legislature here today.
Of the Rs 1,32,000-crore investment being made in SEZs in the state, over Rs 95,000 crore comes into SEZs in Konkan, the survey said.
Altogether 42 SEZs have been approved in western Maharashtra (10,228 hectares, Rs 22,607 crore investment), 13 in Marathwada (3,980 hectares, Rs 4,265 crore investment) and nine in Vidarbha (6,004 hectares, Rs 10,409 crore investment).
In all, 175 proposals were received, of which 122 were approved (84 formal and 38 in-principle), the survey said.
These SEZs are expected to provide jobs to 53.48 lakh people, it added.
The maximum number of SEZs are from IT sector (45), while 21 are multi-product SEZs and 56 are single product zones.
