Hyderabad, March 23, 2008: Lok Satta Party president Jayaprakash Narayan today hailed the decision of the Union Government to make farmers stake holders in Special Economic Zones (SEZs).
In a statement here on Saturday, he said he had all along maintained that mere monetary compensation at current market price was insufficient for farmers parting with their valuable lands for creation of SEZs.
A depreciating asset like money could never adequately compensate for the loss of the land which was an appreciating asset, he said. He suggested that SEZs could be integrated in local governments. He pointed out that the AP Industrial Infrastructure Corporation in 1996 handed over the management of industrial estates to local entrepreneurs with the right to collect service charges.
