Congress favours compensating SEZ promoters in Goa

Panaji, July 19, 2008: The Congress party in Goa favours compensating the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) promoters here whose projects were notified and recommended for denotification before the Union Commerce Ministry by the State Government.

“We will have to compensate these promoters. We will have no other option” said the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Mr Fransisco Sardinha.

Mr Sardinha said that Union Commerce Minister Mr Kamal Nath favours denotifying these SEZs as they are opposed by the people. “He (minister) won’t be able to give round the clock security for these projects if people oppose them. The law is a technical t hing which can be discussed,” the GPCC Chief said.

He said that the Congress favours compensating the SEZ promoters but to what extend they should be compensated should be decided. Goa has shunned doors on the SEZs in the state by scrapping 12 such projects while three SEZs are still in the process of de notification.

The Union Commerce Ministry had earlier expressed their inability to denotify them. The Ministry had suggested that the State Government should initiate dialogues with the promoters. – PTI
